The Art of War pt 2 (patch 5.1)

My next planned Art of War post was going be various leveling strategies but since the patch a few days ago it's been very buggy and difficult to tell what's an intended change and what is a bug.  As soon as everything settles down I'll definitely make that post.

One awesome new addition is Pandarian Spirit Trainers.  They are new NPCs you can battle and they award daily bags and possibly one of four new elemental pets.  More on that in a sec.  Here though is a list of the new trainers and tips on how to beat them.  They are quite challenging if you don't have the right pets or strategy.  If you do they are absolutely one-shottable.  New word!!! lol

Thundering Pandaren Spirit:  Arguably the most difficult due to his elemental pet being particularly nasty!!  But beatable.  (64,93 Vale of Eternal Blossoms)
Elemental:  Stone Rush, Crystal Prison, Rupture
Beast:  Stone Rush, Burrow, Stoneskin
Critter:  Ooze Touch, Creeping Ooze, Expunge

My team:
Molten Hatchling:  Leech Life, Brittle Webbing, Cauterize
Darkmoon Zeppelin:  Missile, Decoy, Explode
Emperor Crab:  Surge, Healing Wave, Whirlpool

I used the Molten Hatchling's Brittle Webbing first, it got stunned, then swapped in the Emperor Crab to deal with the Elemental and to wear down the second pet a bit before dying.  Then brought in the Zep against the beast and finished it off with Explode.  The Molten Hatcling finished off the Critter and ended the fight at about 80% health.

I've done this fight several other times and if you don't have the exact same set up, don't worry.  I've found that Snails, including the Rapana Whelk, are very strong.  Many critters are great against all the elementas due to their family passive that resists stuns by a full round.  Huge here!!  If you have a hard hitting Aquatic like I did and good RNG you can burst down the ele too.

With the proper counters the other pets weren't that hard.  The elemental is definitely the tough one.  Get rid of it and you're gtg with the right set up.  Make sure to have counters!!  Also if you don't get faced off against the pet you want first just forfeit until you do.  Swapping out is very punishing in these fights so do it as little as possible and only as part of a strat (like my first using a Molten Hatchling to eat the stun and get Brittle Webbing up), to sacrifice a pet to a big hit, or if it's totally unavoidable.  Forfeiting until you get the pet you want saves a swap and may mean a win vs a loss.

Burning Pandaren Spirit:  (57,42 Townlong Steppes)
Flyer:  Swarm, Confusing Sting, Glowing Toxin
Elemental: Conflagrate, Immolate, Cauterize
Dragonkin: Breath, Cyclone, Lift

My team:
Gregarious Grell:  Punch, Immolate, Cauterize
Nether Faerie Dragon:  Evanescence, Arcane Blast, Moonfire
Squirrel: Crouch, Woodchipper, Nut Barrage

I used the Squirrel against the elemental first, then the Grell against the dragonkin, and Nether Faerie against the Flyer.  Nether Faeries are now dragonkin which makes them slower but also the perfect counter to flyers.  They take less damage from and their magic attacks do more damage to them.  And they are fairly easy to find in the wild.  The squirrel and grell both did just fine.  The heal and dot from the Grell make him a fairly tanky little dude and the squirrel shakes off Elemental damage like a wet dog on a hot day!

Generally you want an aquatic or critter for the Elemental and something that counters a flyer or dragonkin. Remember to look for abilities not just pet families.

Flowing Pandaren Spirit: (61,87 Dread Wastes)
Elemental: Whirlpool, Geyser, Tidal Wave
Critter:  Water Jet, Healing Wave, Tidal Wave
Aquatic:  Pump, Dive, Whirlpool

My team:
Pterrordax Hatchling: Slicing Wind, Ancient Blessing, Lift Off
Disgusting Oozeling: Absorb, Corrosion, Acidic Goo
Rapana Whelk: Absorb, Shell Shield, Dive

Every pet on this team does aquatic damage.  Whatever you do do not put an elemental against this team.  It will get squashed.  Note that all the trainers pets have spells that you wouldn't expect from their respective families also rats are beasts, moths are critter, etc.  They basically break every rule we know so far, lol.

Magic pets are very strong here since they take less damage from aquatics.  Oozelings are awesome as their dots are powerful and they can heal themselves while the dots tick away.  Two oozelings could take this entire team.  My Whelk dealt with the Ele but it died when the Ele was at 10% health.  My oozeling took over and then took out the entire rest of the team before dying at the same time as the last enemy pet.  My Pterrordax Hatchling sat out the whole fight.

If you don't have magic pets high enough typical counters will work too.  Since the Elemental does all aquatic damage you could use a Mechancial pet and be just fine.  There are many mechanical pets that are really good and the ones with Repair + the racial of coming back to life with 20% health will be very useful.  Just keep the elementals far far away from this team!

Whispering Pandaren Spirit:  (29,36 Jade Forest)
Elemental: Slicing Wind, Wild Winds, Soothing Mists
Dragonkin: Flyby, Slicing Wind, Wild Winds
Critter: Moth Balls, Moth Dust, Cocoon Strike

My Team:
Molten Hatchling:  Leech Life, Brittle Webbing, Cauterize
Gregarious Grell: Punch, Immolate, Cauterize
Nether Faerie Dragon:  Evanescence, Arcane Blast, Moonfire

I took out the critter first with my Molten Hatchling, it was almost at full health so it whittled down the Elemental before dying, finished it off with the Nether Faerie Dragon, then used the Grell on the Dragonkin.  This was an easy one shot with these pets.  Snails and Flayers work well too here.  The combo of flying and aquatic damage mean you want to avoid using Elementals and Aquatics here.  Magic and Dragonkins would work well too since they are resistant to aquatic and flying types of damage.

Hopefully the above info will help make these teams a bit easier for you.  Remember even without the perfect team you can beat these.  My boyfriend beat them all with a Cockroach, Vampiric Batling, Celestial Dragon, Golden Dragon Hatchling, and Restless Shadeling.  It took forever and he died a lot but he did it.  So long as you have strong pets in general and avoid counters you will probably beat them.  If you use the advice I gave above you will definitely beat them.  Otherwise you just have to see which dies first...the enemy team or your patience!

And since I have to have screenshots in all my posts, here are a few of my favorite pets.  I have so many and this is just a handful but each one is awesome!!

This is Pester, my long sought after rare Scourged Whelpling.  My jaw hit the floor when on a random flyby of the area, there he was, just waiting for me!  I was so happy!  This little guy is awesome in pvp too.

This is one of the new pets introduced in 5.1.  Can you guess which raid boss he drops off of??  Since he's a spitting image of my Corehound, Boss, I named him Mini Boss!  :D

This is Sadie.  She's also one of the new pets.  She's a Kun Lai runt found in, wait for it.....Kun Lai Summit!  She's not rare atm so am waiting on a rare Sadie or a stone to upgrade her.  We'll see which comes first.  I already adore her though.

Auria is a Pterrordax Hatchling and was my first pet to reach level 25.  Even after collecting hundreds more pets she is still one of my favorites.  She's a tanky little thing that can handle most of what I throw at her.  And she has a particular appetite for tasty little Crawdads!!

This is Nikita, my Golden Civet.  She's so adorable and I love that she's big enough to actually see.  She's actually not a bad pet in pvp but I need to get her those few levels to 25.  Turns out the Civet I thought was Nikita was actually a boy, lol.  Yes, these pets actually have genders.  I had to find another fast rare female so my Nikita could come back home.

Syclla is my Emperor Crab and is a little powerhouse.  She has crazy high attack power and can heal herself.  She was a lovely surprise as I had no idea Emperor Crabs were so awesome!

Samantha is my Widow Spiderling.  Spiders are my favorite type of beast.  They can put out some damage and heal themselves at the same time.  Quite deadly!!

This is Breaker, my rare Minfernal.  Minfernals have the nasty reputation of being one of the most sought after pets in WoW but also the most rare.  Imagine my surprise when after a server reset the second pet I found and battled turned out to be rare.  I never get that lucky!  Well, I guess almost never. This guy is badass looking and as a nod to my former Warlock main was one I knew I just had to get.  Break yourselves upon this rock hard body!!!

And finally we have Draegar.  I found him as an uncommon but he was the perfect breed so I used a Dragonkin stone on him that dropped from a daily bag.  He is going to be quite the survivor with a hibernate type heal, damage reduction from each individual hit, and decent damage attack.  I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do!
